What is JPEGists?
JPEGists is an umbrella for various photography projects. Both solo projects by JPEGists creator (Shane Becker, 👋🏻 hi that’s me), groups of photographers, or creative partners.
So… who is JPEGists?
That’s a great question. I’m glad you asked! JPEGists is Shane Becker. And others as they come and go on specific projects. An art show here, a co-shoot there, an episode on the YouTube channel, a zine collaborator.
Why is the name “JPEGists”?
Formats are always rising and falling in photography. But somehow someway, JPEG is the one thing that still holds true. It’s been a surprisingly resilient format over the decades. The same way that “GIF” is more than just a file format (it’s an aesthetic, a genre, a subtext), JPEG means more than just an image format. It means photography, published, portable, without borders or masters… because the web.
Where is JPEGists?
Portland, Oregon. Most of the time.
Southern California. Some of the time.
Liminal space. All the time, all of the time.
